CIVILIANS, ca. 1940. Ed. ca. 25. Signed and titled in pencil. This is an unstamped WPA print, and bears a number "18" in the lower right corner, which might indicate that it was the eighteenth impression in the usual WPA edition of ca. 25. This terrifying image of a wartime family of five, with two young children, all of them in gasmasks, is lightened by the pretty mother checking her appearance in a compact mirror. Humor doesn't get much drier than this. Number 99 in the NYPL WPA list. In mint condition. |
